If you're seeing this, someone probably shared it with you.
Which probably means you have people who know you and think you're cool, and want good things for you. They probably know that you're intelligent and that you have a big heart, and that you would love to spend your days applying your strengths, your eccentricities, and your vision for a beautiful world. Before we go any further: let's celebrate that.
Let's also be honest about how hard this game of employment is. Frankly, it's unfair. It is not a meritocracy. Having skills is certainly an advantage, but all of this is but for the grace of God. Maybe your last venture wasn't a good long-term solution. Maybe the startup you were working for hit a dead end. Maybe the beautiful project you were building didn't find enough funding. Maybe COVID happened, or AI happened. Looking for a job sucks, and it bears no indication of how beautiful or deserving a person you are. Hopefully these challenges, like so many others, lead to growth for you.
But here is the truth this page exists to tell: there is just one job. Even when the efforts scale and more people are needed, there will still just be one job.
That job is creative director. A persistent yet fumbling activist. Ambitious, and perpetually unachieving.
What's the actual job? Cold outreach, with warmth. For all the causes that need it. And the truth is there's really only one cause: reducing suffering, increasing joy.
Call it a job. Call it an artist in residence. Call it a rebound from your last thing. Your job is going to be building scalable interventions, and establishing relationships, with people and with ideas that would be good for the world.
